Canal events
Have you used the canal in the past month?

Plan your event on Scotland's canals

The Scottish Canals are nearly 200 years old and maintain many of their original design features and character - making them the perfect venue for many events.  We love to see safe, enjoyable events on the canals, so whether you're thinking small or large, please get in touch!

We're always delighted to hear your ideas, and we really enjoy providing venues for a wide range of events, from short sponsored walks along beautiful towpaths, to community fun days in historic locations or even competitive challenges along unique routes.

We know that not everyone has experience organising events, so to help you create the best event possible, we've put together some How To… guides and some useful links.  These take you through the planning process, and our event co-ordinators are on hand to answer any questions.   Your event can also be promoted to the thousands of people who visit this site regularly!

Please do remember that your event is your responsibility to organise and manage.  British Waterways therefore requires event organisers to:

  • get in touch with the local British Waterways event co-ordinator

  • plan their event carefully and in good time

  • visit the event site

  • complete an Event Application form

  • carry out and submit a risk assessment

  • create an event plan and event safety plan, according to the scale of the event - speak to the local British Waterways event co-ordinator for guidance

  • indemnify British Waterways against all claims, costs, proceedings and damages arising from the event organiser's use of British Waterways' property

  • provide evidence of appropriate public liability insurance cover

  • observe information or instructions from the local canal staff

  • follow the Waterway Code as appropriate

  • consider other canal and towpath users, members of the public and landowners

The How To… guides should be used for general reference when planning an event on British Waterways' property.  You will need to decide which parts are relevant to your particular event.
