Following the establishment of the Canal & River Trust to
look after 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in England & Wales
from April 2012, BWS will remain in the public sector as a smaller,
streamlined body operating only in Scotland. A new Board,
consisting of a chair and several non-executive directors, will be
appointed by the Scottish Government to manage and develop
Scotland's canals.
Scotland's canals provide a stunning setting for sailing,
boating and paddle sports. As well as this primary role, they
stimulate multi-million pound regeneration and development, support
Scotland's tourism and destination economy, contribute
significantly to the active living agenda, biodiversity, heritage,
education and enable skills and confidence building projects in
some of Scotland's most disadvantaged communities. Since devolution
over ten years ago and to support this cross-cutting agenda, BWS
has a focused engagement network with a wide range of stakeholders,
users and partners in the public and private sectors to deliver its
activities. This established network also provides the opportunity
to seek advice on issues affecting canals in Scotland.
