Wildlife on the Union Canal

The Union Canal provides a vital corridor for wildlife of many different sorts, through the city and on out into the countryside.

Whether you are out on the canal in a boat or enjoying the towpath on a bike or on foot, there is plenty of wildlife to be seen and enjoyed along the canal. Leave behind the hustle and bustle of city and town life and enter the calming surrounds of open countryside and picturesque woodland where local wildlife abounds. See a wide range of wildlife from deer to foxes, herons to swans and even buzzards swooping low over the fields looking for prey.

Have you seen these animals?

Spot otters along the canal as well as water vole, hedgehog, brown hare, badger, weasel, water shrew, and the common toad.

In the air

Look out for sparrowhawk, skylark, kingfisher, swift, linnet, reed bunting, spotted flycatcher, tree sparrow, grey partridge, great crested grebe, bullfinch, song thrush and bats.

Plants on the Union

Giant bellflower, common centaury, meadow cranesbill, ragged robin, tufted loosetrife, flat stalked pondweed.

 

FACT!

Aqueducts and bridges along the canal make great habitats for bats. Look out for Daubenton's bat and pipistrelle bat.
