New Concepts

  • Eco Hotel This concept would see a network of these structures at key tourist locations along the canal network.
Eco Hotel Considerable thought has been given to integrating cutting edge renewable technologies to minimise our impact on the environment.
Floating Home Modern build techniques allows us to design and build light weight, yet incredibly thermally efficient structures. This concept could see opportunities to live on the canal, in a spectacular environment, urban or rural locations and either permanent residences or holiday homes.
Floating Restaurant By up-scaling the floating homes concept we can create commercial opportunities for a restaurant, office, boutique or even hotel accommodation.
Holiday Chalet Designing holiday chalets which can be situated in close proximity to the waterspace yet not look out of place in the environment was the brief for this concept. Again a soft footprint and environmentally sensitive materials make a bespoke canal chalet which fits comfortably within our sensitive canalscape
Play Cafe This cleverly designed structure creates a place where adults can enjoy cafe life in a canalside environment with the kids safely inside the supervised play centre.

We have been working to create new ideas for canalside development.

British Waterways Scotland has been working with some of Scotland's most talented architects to develop new ideas for canalside development.

This brings its own challenges as all of Scotland's Canals are Scheduled Ancient Monuments so requires innovative thinking to introduce new development to the canalside whilst protecting the history and environment which makes them special.

All of these concept ideas aspire to be eco-friendly, reversible, aesthetically pleasing and compliment the historical context of the canal.
