What do you use the canal for?

Discover the Caledonian Canal by Boot or Bike

The Great Glen and Caledonian Canal provide great opportunities for enjoying long distance exercise and scenery under your own steam.  There are however few places where you can find shorter routes that provide a little more variety.

Walk and cycle routes

We want to link up with existing walks groups in the area and recce some routes that can be printed and posted online as freely downloadable pdfs.  This will complement existing leaflets produced by Step It Up Highland. The aim is to produce 10 walk/bike routes that incorporate the canal for some part of the journey - ranging from approximately 3 km to 15 km.  These 'guides' will provide mapped directions, information and interpretation of the natural and built heritage.

Training opportunities

There will be opportunities for anybody who wishes to get a little more involved in this project in the form of navigation training, wildlife ID and group management in the field and also some research and interpretive writing skills.  We really want to support existing groups to keep on enjoying the area and offer some fresh routes for both locals and visitors.

Existing walks groups will be contacted directly about this project but anybody who is not currently a member of any group and would like to get involved, please get in touch with Stephen Wiseman:
