Cullochy Lock Gate Replacement

The Caledonian Canal is one of the Highlands most popular visitor attractions with over 1,400 boats transiting the canal each year.

Maintenance of the lock gates is vital to maintain the navigation of this almost 200-year-old waterway. Any failure during operation could lead serious health and safety implications for both staff and visitors to the canal. Scottish Canals has a prioritised asset management programme for all lock gates in Scotland, based on condition and risk. As such, Cullochy Lock has been identified as priority for gate replacement in our 2020/21 winter works programme.

The installation of the gates at Cullochy lock will complete the larger lock gate replacement programme in the Middle District of the Caledonian Canal. As part of this programme, actuators and the associated infrastructure will be designed, installed and commissioned at Kytra Lock and Cullochy Lock.

Works will begin at Cullochy on Monday 2nd November 2020 for completion in March 2021. During the works there will be no access to navigation for vessels and there will also be towpath restrictions in place.
