The Caledonian Canal is one of the Highlands most popular visitor attractions with over 1,400 boats transiting the canal each year.
The Gairlochy top gates at Lock 17 are the largest on the Caledonian Canal, as they form part in the flood defence mechanism separating Loch Lochy from the canal infrastructure and communities west of this point. The gates are over 30 years old and therefore based on age, condition and risk, are considered a priority for replacement.
As part of the asset management strategy surveys and inspections will be carried out during the 2021/2022 winter works programme.
This page will be updated as works progress.
Update 3rd February 2022
In February and March 2022, we will be proceeding with channel clearance and further gate surveys at both Gairlochy Lock 17 and Gairlochy Lock 18.
For the channel clearance works, the North towpath from the Gairlochy swing bridge to the upstream gates at Gairlochy Lock 17 will be closed from 4th February 2022 until 4th March 2022.
The South towpath will remain open, but please beware of the works being undertaken in the vicinity.
