Gairlochy Swing Bridge

An improvement project focused on reducing the risk of safety to staff and visitors on the bridge was undertaken and completed in April 2021.

The Caledonian Canal is one of the Highlands most popular visitor attractions with over 1,400 boats transiting the canal each year.

Gairlochy Swing Bridge on the Caledonian Canal is a public road bridge. In order to significantly reduce risk of safety to staff and visitors, this financial year we will be undertaking an improvement project which will remove the operator from the bridge during bridge operation and place them in a safer working environment with enhanced views of the bridge.

This project includes installing new equipment enclosures, operator’s kiosk and will require the full replacement of control systems, traffic barriers, signage and other ancillary equipment to meet current regulatory standards. The upgrading will also look at the removal of existing hydraulic systems and replace them with modern electrically driven components to increase efficiency of inspections.

As part of the improvement works, the canal will be closed to navigation in this area and there will be some disruption to towpath use.

Works are scheduled to begin on the bridge in January 2021.

We will update this page as works progress.
