Project duration: Monday 10th February to Monday 17th March 2025.

Next month, routine maintenance work will begin at the Corpach Double Lock using funding from Scottish Canals Capital Investment Programme (CIP) 2024/25. Our contractor Mackenzie Construction Ltd will replace 600 bolts on one set of lock gates to prevent any future impact on operations due to age and corrosion.

Scottish Canals prioritises investment in works like these that are integral to the safe operation and navigation of the canals. Find out more about how we plan our project pipeline.

What does the work involve?

The first step will be to remove the lock gates, clean them, and then replace all the bolts with new pre-stressed bolts, before reinstating the gates.

By doing this pre-emptive maintenance, we can ensure that the gates continue to operate safely for boats, hold water better, and last longer.

Information for residents and visitors

The Corpach Basin is home to wharf moorings and the towpath is a popular route for local people and visitors. We are keen to minimise any disruption to users of the space, but there will be some noise at the times when we have to redrill holes and lift the lock gates using cranes. Corpach Harbour will also be closed to vessels for the duration of the works. We do anticipate that the Harbour will be reopened by the time navigation of the Caledonian Canal resumes on Monday 24th March.

We will need to close the northside towpath for a short time. You will find signposting to an alternative route, starting at Banavie locks and proceeding along the Great Glen and National Cycle Network (78).

You can see the diversion around the towpath marked in yellow below.
