17th January 2017 – As the work to drain down the Union Canal begins, so does our fish rescue!
The fish that call the Union Canal home are temporarily moved from the 5km stretch of the waterway due to be drained. The fish rescue team used netting and electro-fishing to capture the fish – a mix of roach, tench, perch, pike, three-spined stickleback, eel and brown trout – which were then transferred to holding tanks and transported along the towpath to the adjacent watered sections of canal. The water level of the canal was drained to around 50cm while the rescue took place.
