Scotland’s canals may look tempting, especially during the course of a heatwave. However there are hidden dangers in bodies of water.
Here are some of the hidden hazards to avoid in our waters:
-
Deep, cold waters – although its’s hot, the water is still very cold and can send the body into shock in seconds
-
Steep, slippery banks – which may make it difficult to get out of the water
-
Hidden currents – dangerous undercurrents can lurk beneath the surface, causing swimmers to get into difficulty
-
Hidden objects, concrete structures and reeds, which can hurt and trap swimmers
-
Remote locations – avoid locations with no/poor mobile phone coverage, and lack of immediate assistance.
