Thursday 28th June, 2pm

Due to the very high temperatures in the Inverness area today, ongoing measurements of the structures of Tomnahurich and Muirtown Swing Bridges show that there has been significant expansion and there would be no certainty that if we were to operate the bridges for boat traffic we would be able to close them again. As these bridges are vital to the smooth running of road traffic in Inverness we have taken the decision to close to boat movements for the remainder of the day.

Fort Augustus Swing Bridge remains closed to boat traffic, however boats with a low air draft can still transit underneath the bridge.

We will take further measurements tomorrow morning and hope that the cooler overnight temperatures allow the structures to contract so that we can return to normal operation.

Thursday 28th June, 9am

We anticipate restrictions to Fort Augustus Swing Bridge today, due to the unusually high temperatures.

Components on the bridge expand in the heat, meaning that it is not possible to properly close it once it has been swung – which would leave the A82 closed to road traffic.

We have been closely monitoring the structure, and measurements taken this morning show that the bridge components have contracted a little overnight with the cooler temperatures. Any waiting boat traffic at Fort Augustus are being moved through the bridge whilst it is still able to close safely.

As the forecast today again is for very high temperatures, we expect to have to introduce bridge restrictions today. Craft with a low air draft will still be able to transit underneath the bridge.

Temperatures are due to drop over the weekend and we anticipate restrictions will be lifted.
