Caledonian Canal Winter Closure 2019/20

The Caledonian Canal will be closed to sea-to-sea traffic for a period this winter to allow essential repairs to be carried out on a number of the canal structures:

Closed to through traffic from 5.30pm Sunday 3rd November 2019 until 8.30am Saturday 28th March 2020


During this closure navigation of some sections of the canal may be possible within normal winter operating hours of Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm, with a minimum of 24 hours prior arrangement with the Canal Office in Inverness by calling: 01463 725500

It is possible that there may also be some short closures at specific locations before or after this closure period – these will be publicised in advance within our winter works programme.

Christmas and New Year arrangements:

Vessels entering the sea locks for safe haven at Corpach or Seaport Marina MUST arrive by 10am on Tuesday 24th December 2019 at the very latest.

After New Year the canal sea locks will re-open for exiting traffic at 9am on Friday 3rd January 2020 and will operate on normal winter hours (Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm).


When the canal re-opens to through traffic on Saturday 28th March 2020, the canal’s Spring operating hours of 8.30am – 5.30pm 7 days per week will apply. Please note that up until Friday 1st May passage must be booked at least 24 hours’ in advance with sea locks or canal office as the lock keepers on duty will need to coordinate boat movements as appropriate. Please allow plenty of time for your passage.
