Forth & Clyde Canal reopened between Bowling & Knightswood

21st March 2016

Emergency works to repair the bascule bridges’ lifting mechanisms and replace all safety pawl bolts has been completed and the bridges are now back in operation.

Works are ongoing to repair lifting mechanisms on the bascule bridges on the Forth & Clyde Canal. Load testing will be carried out during March and the canal will remain closed unril these tests have been completed.

5th November 2015

During routine maintenance work we experienced a failure of a safety device on the bascule bridge in Bowling; while investigating a similar bridge at Linnvale in Clydebank, we discovered comparable signs of wear and tear.

We have subsequently taken the decision to replace the safety devices on three other bascule bridges on the Forth & Clyde Canal which are of a similar age, in addition to the work being carried out on the bridges in Bowling and Linnvale.

This means the Forth & Clyde Canal is closed to all sea traffic with immediate effect while we carry out the necessary works, with the canal effectively closed between Knightswood and Bowling. Only localised boat movements are possible in this area until all five bridges are fully operational.

The bridge locations are:

  • Bowling Bridge, Bowling Basin
  • Ferrydyke Bridge, Old Kilpatrick
  • Linnvale Bridge, Clydebank
  • Farm Road Bridge, Dalmuir West
  • Bard Avenue, Knightswood
