Replacement of Lock Gates at Fort Augustus and Kytra, Caledonian Canal

Update 15th January 2019

Works have begun to install a new pair of lock gates at Fort Augustus lock 2, to improve the buoyancy at Fort Augustus lock gates 3 and 4, and install two pairs of lock gates at Kytra. The water levels have been dropped between Cullochy Lock to the bottom of Fort Augustus Lock Flight and works are in progress to install localised dams and maintain the low water level. Fish are being safely moved to watered sections of the canal. The towpath is currently closed to all users whilst these work are being undertaken.

As part of the ongoing works the towpath between Fort Augustus and Cullochy is currently closed to all users to enable contractors to undertake essential works.

Fort Augustus

Following detailed inspections of the lock flight at Fort Augustus, we are now looking to install a new pair of lock gates at Lock 2 and undertake buoyancy improvement works at Gates 3 and 4. Works are planned to start on 14th January and last for three months. To ensure lifting equipment can safely access the site, we need to close the south side road to traffic during these dates.

Kytra

Following detailed inspections of the lock gates at Kytra Locks, we are now looking to install two pairs of lock gates at this location. Works are scheduled to begin on 14th January and last until 25th March 2019.

The canal will be partially drained down between Cullochy Lock and Fort Augustus to allow these works to take place safely, however by undertaking these works during the winter closure, we hope to minimise disruption to boating traffic.
