Wilcoxholm Embankment works

Update Friday 21st August

The stop planks have been removed today at Manse Road Bridge 43, reopening the canal to boat traffic in this section.

Update Wednesday 3rd June

In line with Scottish Government guidelines we are preparing to restart works at Wilcoxholm Embankment. As a result, the towpath will be closed from Monday 15th June between St Michael’s Aqueduct and Bridge 42 to allow us to carry out essential canal works.

The closure will be in place for approximately 6 weeks. The following diversion route will be in place between Manse Road to The Park Bistro.

Please note the canal remains closed to navigation in this section between Manse Road basin and Bridge 42.

Update 25th March 2020

In line with government guidelines, we have stopped operations at Wilcoxholme Embankment and until the works recommence, the towpath will remain accessible to the public. Those using the towpath are advised to do so with caution, as the works are incomplete. When it is safe to do so, the works will continue, including a further towpath closure. Details of this will be published on this page in due course.

Update 10th March 2020

Earlier today our teams were made aware of an embankment failure at Linlithgow. The Scottish Canals engineering team have been on site to inspect this and are fully aware of this event.

Our ongoing improvements in the area highlight the essential work required and we continue to implement our programme of work alongside our contractors to secure navigation for the full reopening of the Union Canal.

Update 21st January 2020

The embankment works will involve sheet piling at Wilcoxholm embankment 69. However, stop planks need to be deployed at Manse road bridge 43 and Wilcoxholm bridge 42, closing navigation in this area. The stop planks will be deployed on 7th February 2020 and currently anticipating to reopen in April 2020.

Additionally, there will be a towpath closure between Park Farm Bridge (Bridge 41) and Manse Road Bridge (Bridge 43) from the 10 of February 2020. This will remain in place until late spring 2020. Please follow the signed diversion route, as outlined below

We are progressing vital embankment works on the Union Canal at Wilcoxholm, as set out in our Asset Management Strategy.

In order to safeguard the future of the Union Canal at Wilcoxholm, Scottish Canals will appoint a contractor to undertake piling works during the winter months as part of the 2019/20 Winter Works programme.

Works are due to progress in February 2020 and will involve disruption on the canal and towpath in this area.

This page will be updated with further information as works progress.
