Update 5th June 2020
Following the Scottish Government route map out of lockdown, we are preparing to restart works at Fort Augustus. The lock gate project will recommence on Monday 15th June 2020
The works are due for completion by 31st July 2020, allowing the canal to reopen to navigation. There will be no impact to the towpath, however the south side road will be closed from 18th June to 24th July to accommodate works. The road will require full closure on Thursday 18th June to remove old lock gates at Gate 1. The road will then be opened back up for use and only closed off when necessary for reinstatement works.
Update 6th April 2020
Lock gates 1,3,4,5,& 6 were installed, as planned, between October 2019 and March 2020. The new gates are currently all in place, secure and are fully operational on existing hydraulic controls. However as a result of COVID 19, we were unable to complete all works. When it is safe to do so, the following works will be carried out: area walkway tread install, fully commission and test the gates, landscaping and demobilisation from site. This will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete after safe commencement on site.
We will update the timescales for this we are able to.
Phase 2 of the lock gate replacement programme at Fort Augustus is scheduled to take place this winter, with works starting onsite on Monday 28th October 2019 due for completion on Saturday 28th March 2020.
To ensure safe lifting operations throughout the works, we will need to periodically close the south side road to traffic from lock gates 1 to lock gates 6. Access will only be affected during specific dates to accommodate major activities; these dates will be shared on our website and social media once confirmed.
As part of the works, there will be restrictions to access on the towpath between Fort Augustus and Aberchalder between late November 2019 and January 2020.
