Major improvement works now complete along Forth and Clyde Canal

Scottish Canals is delighted to announce that towpath improvement works along the Forth and Clyde canal are now complete.

The £1.8m works, which were backed by funding from Scottish Government and developed and delivered through partnership between Scottish Canals and Sustrans, will improve the experience of active travel and leisure users along the canal towpath.

The project began in February 2023 and stretched 2.1km from Applecross Street to Ruchill Bridge, in North Glasgow, with a further stretch of 1.75km of works taking place from Whitecrook Street going east to Blairdardie, Clydebank.

Works along the Glasgow banch included: resurfacing towpaths, adjusting towpath gradients allowing for better drainage, kerbing improvements and lighting ducts were also installed. Sections of towpaths in Clydebank were also future proofed by introducing lighting ducts and tree root protection where mature trees caused distortion of the towpath surface.

The towpath is part of the popular National Cycle Network connecting coast to coast and city to city.

The works were carried out, over a number of phases, by Scottish Canals’ contractors MacKenzie Construction Limited, with minimum disruption to towpath users.

All diversion routes have now been lifted.

The routes are also further connected by the newly opened active-travel bridge at Stockingfield, North Glasgow, which completes the last link in the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath.
