Before the improvement works, sections of the towpath were surfaced with uneven and deteriorating cobbles. This created barriers for people using mobility aids, cycles, cargo bikes and prams, and posed a clear health and safety risk.

The works were delivered alongside significant regeneration in the area and form part of a longer‑term plan to improve the towpath between Boroughmuir High School and Lochrin Basin. Together, these developments will improve the canal corridor for everyday journeys, living, business and leisure.

What we delivered

Construction works were carried out on site in line with agreed design proposals. The existing cobbled surface was replaced with new smooth Scottish Whin stone paving, designed to support walking and wheeling. The Fountainbridge works build on earlier Scottish Canals improvements between Boroughmuir High School and the canal, and complement surfacing upgrades already completed on the east side of Lochrin Basin.

Alongside surfacing improvements, the project upgraded canal services. Six new water points and six new 32A power bollards were installed. This has increased capacity and helps future‑proof the area for changing boating needs, including the potential for charging electric watercraft.

Lighting and personal safety

Lighting was an important element of the project. Evidence from active travel research shows that poor lighting can discourage people from using routes, particularly during darker hours and especially for women and girls.

Improving visibility along the towpath helps people feel safer and more confident when travelling, supporting year‑round use of the canal corridor. This consideration informed the design and delivery of the lighting improvements at Fountainbridge.

Discovering the past

During construction, a previously unknown historic wall was uncovered beneath the towpath. The discovery highlighted the historic importance of the canal corridor and the care taken during delivery to protect heritage assets.

Opening and public use

The upgraded towpath was completed and opened in time for Cycle to Work Day 2025, improving access along one of Edinburgh’s busiest and most well‑used canal routes. The works now support safer, more comfortable everyday journeys and better connections through the Fountainbridge area.

Working with partners

Scottish Canals worked closely with partners throughout the project. Design development was coordinated with adjacent land owners to ensure the towpath works seamlessly tie in with existing and proposed developments.

The project was supported by funding partners, including funding from the Scottish Government and developed and delivered through partnership between Scottish Canals and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and Vastint UK.

The total investment in the project was approximately £1 million. The timing of nearby development and associated funding opportunities allowed Scottish Canals and its partners to coordinate investment and deliver a step‑change in the quality of the route.
