Students to Help Transform Bowling and the Bowline in New Conservation Partnership

A new collaborative initiative between Scottish Canals and Glasgow Kelvin College is set to bring a fresh wave of environmental stewardship to Bowling and the Bowline in the Dumbarton area, with students taking an active role in conservation, wildlife monitoring, and community improvement.

Launching formally in August 2026, the partnership will see college students adopt sections of the canal, committing one day each month to hands-on volunteering. Their work will focus on improving biodiversity, tackling invasive plant species, and enhancing the area for both wildlife and visitors.

The project builds on a successful taster volunteer day held on Wednesday, 20 May, where students made an immediate and meaningful impact. During the session, participants cleared an impressive 30 square metres of Himalayan balsam, a fast-spreading invasive plant that threatens native ecosystems.

A Focus on Conservation and Community

Through the programme, students will gain practical experience in environmental management while contributing to the long-term health of the canal network. Activities will include:

  • Removal and monitoring of invasive species
  • Installation of bird boxes to support local wildlife
  • Recording and tracking biodiversity across the site
  • Gardening and habitat restoration
  • Painting and maintenance work
  • Litter picking to keep the area clean and welcoming

By engaging in these tasks, students will not only develop valuable skills but also play a direct role in protecting and enhancing a much-loved local landscape.

Tackling Invasive Species and Restoring Native Flora

A key element of the project will be experimenting with different methods for removing invasive plants, particularly Himalayan balsam. Students will monitor the effectiveness of these approaches, collecting data that will inform future conservation efforts.

Once areas have been cleared, the focus will shift to restoration. Plans are in place to replace invasive plant cover with native species, including the Scottish bluebell, helping to re-establish natural habitats and improve biodiversity.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The partnership reflects a shared commitment between Scottish Canals and Glasgow Kelvin College to environmental sustainability, education, and community engagement.

Both organisations are excited and enthusiastic about the potential impact of the collaboration, seeing it as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while transforming the canal corridor into a thriving, biodiverse space for all to enjoy.

As preparations begin for the August launch, excitement is building among staff and students alike, with many looking forward to making a lasting difference in the Bowling and Bowline areas.
