Essential improvements planned for The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre
Scottish Canals is preparing to submit a planning application for a series of essential improvements to The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, now approaching its 25th year. These works will ensure the building remains safe, welcoming and sustainable for generations to come, while delivering modest yet meaningful enhancements for visitors, staff, and the local community.
Our planned upgrades focus on accessibility, comfort, safety and long‑term stewardship of this iconic site. Key elements include:
- A more accessible entrance and improved pedestrian areas to support safer and easier movement for everyone.
- Replacement of ageing timber with modern, durable cladding to protect the building for the long term.
- A refreshed arrival plaza, designed to create a safer, more intuitive and more welcoming first impression.
- Improved toilet provision, including enhanced accessible, baby‑changing and family facilities.
- A bookable workshop and learning space, offering new opportunities for community groups, schools and partners.
- Upgraded insulation, windows and doors to boost energy efficiency and reduce heat loss.
These proposals reflect Scottish Canals’ responsibility to protect and improve our estate in a way that supports Scotland’s journey to Net Zero.
The building upgrades will significantly improve thermal performance, lowering energy demand and operational emissions. New external landscaping will enhance local biodiversity, creating greener and more resilient surroundings, and the introduction of a Changing Places Toilet will greatly expand access for visitors with complex care needs, ensuring The Falkirk Wheel continues to be a destination for everyone.
These works form part of Scottish Canals’ ongoing responsibility to maintain and futureproof its estate. Submitting a planning application is an early step in the process and enables the next stage of design to progress. External funding will be required before any construction can begin.
We will continue to engage openly with local communities, visitors, partners and stakeholders as the design evolves.
