Essential improvements planned for The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre
Scottish Canals has secured planning permission for a programme of essential improvements to The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, as the site approaches its 25th anniversary.
These upgrades will protect and enhance one of Scotland’s most iconic visitor attractions ensuring it remains safe, welcoming and sustainable for future generations, while improving the overall visitor experience.
Project status
Planning permission for the improvements has now been granted and Scottish Canals is currently progressing funding applications to support delivery of the project.
Subject to securing funding, works are anticipated to begin on site in November 2026.
The visitor centre will remain open throughout the works. However, to allow improvements to be carried out safely, there may be temporary facilities, alternative routes, or short-term changes to how visitors access parts of the site. We will share updates in advance to help visitors plan their visit.

About the improvements
The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre plays a vital role in supporting the visitor experience at the world’s only rotating boat lift. Since opening in 2002, visitor expectations, accessibility standards and environmental requirements have evolved significantly.
The approved improvements respond to these changes and will deliver a more accessible, energy-efficient and future‑ready facility, while respecting the unique character of the site.
Key improvements include
- New and improved entrance and arrival experience: A reconfigured, more visible entrance and a redesigned arrival plaza will create a clearer, more welcoming gateway to the site and improve visitor flow.
- Enhanced accessibility for all visitors: Improved walking, wheeling and cycling routes and a pedestrian-focused entrance plaza plus expanded facilities—including a Changing Places toilet—will make the site more inclusive.
- Upgraded visitor facilities: Refurbished toilets, family and baby-changing facilities, and reworked internal spaces will improve comfort and capacity.
- A learning and community space: An improved bookable meetings & events space will provide opportunities for schools, community groups and partners to engage with the site.
- Major energy-efficiency improvements: Upgrades to insulation, glazing, ventilation and heating systems will reduce energy use, improve thermal comfort, and support Scotland’s journey to net zero.
- Replacement of ageing building materials: New durable cladding will protect the building for the long term while enhancing its appearance.
- Landscape and public realm upgrades: Improvements to the surrounding landscape will prioritise pedestrians, enhance biodiversity and create a safer, greener environment.
Next steps
Scottish Canals is now focused on securing external funding to deliver the project.
