Main

The canals are beautiful blue spaces home to many idyllic locations to visit on a sunny day. Although the water may look inviting, it's important to keep #CanalCareful around these waterways. Cold water shock is a sudden and intense physical response to immersion in cold water, typically below 15°C. This shock can lead to involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and even heart attacks. The initial shock can cause panic, making it difficult to swim or stay afloat, increasing the risk of drowning.

Symptoms of cold water shock include a sudden inhalation of air, which can lead to water entering the lungs if underwater. If you unexpectedly enter cold water, try to float on your back to keep your airway clear and calm your breathing.  This can help you regain control and call for help. Wearing appropriate gear, such as a wetsuit and flotation device, when engaging in water activities can significantly increase your chances of surviving the initial shock.

Our #CanalCareful campaign emphasises the importance of safety around canals. To stay safe, remember to stop, think, and act. Pause and take in your surroundings, identify potential hazards, and take necessary actions to ensure safety, such as moving away from the edge or allowing cyclists to pass.

Scotland's canals offer a wonderful environment for recreation and relaxation. By being #CanalCareful and understanding the risks of cold water shock, we can all enjoy these waterways safely. Remember to respect the water, stay informed, and always prioritise safety.
