Celebrate St Andrew’s Day with Scotland’s first outdoor ceilidh at The Kelpies
The countdown is on for Scotland’s first open air evening ceilidh to be held at the iconic Kelpies.
Scottish Canals and Falkirk Council are gearing up to host the event ahead of St Andrew’s Day.
Ceilidh @ The Kelpies will take place on Friday, November 28 with Scotland’s chart-topping ceilidh band, Whisky Kiss, leading the celebrations.
Whisky Kiss is the first and only ceilidh band to have an international iTunes no.1 single, with their debut single ‘Jocks Revenge’ topping charts from Europe to Latin America. Their high-octane tunes and world-class musicians are renowned across the globe for filling dancefloors.
Iain MacPhail, Whisky Kiss founding member, said: “Whisky Kiss cannot wait to get the ceilidh started at the Kelpies on the 28th of November! It’s shaping up to be an amazing month for the group, and we’ll be arriving to The Kelpies fresh from performances at St Andrew’s celebrations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Beijing, as well as Edinburgh and Stirling Castles.
“It's no exaggeration to say we are thrilled to be bringing our chart-topping band, champion highland dancers, and breakdancers back to the spectacular setting of The Kelpies."
Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn, Leader of Falkirk Council said: “It promises to be an exciting night at the Kelpies and guests will have a great time with the entertainment on offer. Staging events at this fabulous location will help boost our local economy and ensure that the Kelpies and Helix park remain a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike.”
The event also brings local talent to The Kelpies - dancers from Grangemouth’s Scottish, British and World Championship award-winning McKenchie School of Dance will open the evening.
Falkirk Trad Band will then take to the stage, bringing the authentic sounds of Scotland to life with a mix of traditional reels and jigs.
Next in the spotlight will be Falkirk Schools Pipe Band, who are no strangers to The Kelpies. The youngsters return following a successful season, including competing at the World Pipe Band Championships.
Whisky Kiss will keep the energy high for the evening, and whether you are an experienced dancer or stepping onto the floor for the first time, their caller will guide you through each dance, from well-loved favourites like the Gay Gordons and Dashing White Sergeant to a non-stop Strip the Willow.
And, when your dancing feet need a moments rest, Whisky Kiss will be ready to enthral and inspire, with a display from their world championship-winning Highland dancers and Scottish champion breakdancers.
Guests can also look forward to a specially curated menu of Scottish-inspired pizzas, complete with toppings of haggis, neeps, and tatties for a twist on classic flavours. Perfect for fuelling the energy to dance the night away.
The Kelpies will provide a truly epic backdrop to proceedings – the world’s tallest equine sculptures, they stand 100ft tall and weigh more than 300 tonnes each, symbols of Scotland’s industrial heritage and folklore.
The Kelpies are in the Helix Park between Falkirk and Grangemouth and stand guard over Scotland’s newest section of canal, which links the Forth & Clyde Canal and the River Carron.
Scottish Canals commissioned sculptor Andy Scott to create The Kelpies, which celebrated their 10th anniversary last year. Since their unveiling in 2014, they have become one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions and have contributed £81m to the Scottish economy.
The Ceilidh @ The Kelpies will also mark the first anniversary of The Kelpies Experience launch. This offers participants a guided aerial exploration right to the ‘head up’ Kelpie’s mouth.
The attraction, a partnership between canal custodians Scottish Canals and Zone Events, offers a unique and educational experience and has been a valuable platform for the generation of much needed donations by charities and other organisations. The attraction has raised over £700K for charities in its first year alone.
The Ceilidh @ The Kelpies event will take place on the in front of The Kelpies with gates opening 6.30pm and entertainment starting at 7pm. The event will finish at 8.30pm.
People of all ages (age five and up) and experience levels are encouraged to join in the traditional Scottish dancing, and Cycling without Age will be available to assist those with limited mobility to attend the event.
Visitors can also look forward to some tasty food and plenty of drinks.
