As well as the management and development of five Scottish canals, we care for bridges, buildings, locks, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and 19 water supply reservoirs in locations across Scotland. Visitors to Crinan Canal Basin benefit from improved landscaping and access routes
A major programme of improvements to the landscape and access routes around the Crinan Basin has transformed the experience of visitors. Completed this year, following a series of public consultations, the improvements were funded by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and Argyll and Bute Council.
COMPLETED Locks 17 and 18, Forth & Clyde Canal
Navigation is open through locks 17 and 18 on the Forth & Clyde Canal following two days of investigation into a leakage. The team over-planked the gates at Lock 18 and diving inspections are completed.

COMPLETED. Crinan Canal: Winter Works Programme 2025/2026
While the Crinan Canal is closed for the winter season, we carried out emergency works on embankments and continued our access improvements around Crinan basin. The canal is now fully re-opened with some resurfacing of towpaths ongoing.
COMPLETED Fort Augustus Planned Winter Works 2024/25
We are carrying out essential work to the Fort Augustus lock flight this winter, with a £1.65m capital investment as part of Scottish Canals’ Asset Management Strategy.
COMPLETED Union Canal: Fountainbridge Towpath Improvements
Scottish Canals has completed major towpath improvements at Fountainbridge in Edinburgh. The project upgrades a key section of the Union Canal, improving access for people who walk, wheel and cycle, as well as for boaters using the canal.Â
COMPLETED Falkirk Five Trail
Thanks to funding from Falkirk Council, made available through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we have created a new 5km active travel route around The Falkirk Wheel with community designed art benches and bike racks installed at regular intervals around the trail.
