Volunteering
Scottish Canals enjoys working with volunteers. In return for your time, commitment, enthusiasm and expertise, we provide opportunities to gain unique experience, develop new skills and make a real difference in your communities.

How you can get involved
There are lots of opportunities for volunteers to get involved, in each of the following areas:
- Interpretation and promotion – such as leading and assisting with school visits, organising events and community boating
- Practical activities – for example, clearing vegetation and litter, creating habitats, improving access, restoration and archaeological digs
- Recording and monitoring – such as recording heritage, carrying out inspections and monitoring biodiversity
- Supporting our customer service teams – for example, as towpath rangers or on education visits
- Project management, research and administration – such as searching through archives and making sure the activities above happen.
We have a duty of care towards everyone on Scotland’s canals. As part of this, we have a volunteer management process which minimises risks to volunteers and Scottish Canals, while enabling volunteers to enjoy the experience of working on our network.
